Itinerary
Moshi to Rongai Gate to Simba Camp
The journey begins as we drive to the Rongai Gate, the starting point of the Rongai Route. This trail takes you through lush rainforests and provides glimpses of the unique flora and fauna. Reach Simba Camp, situated at an altitude of approximately 2,650 meters, with temperatures dropping to around 15°C. The campsite offers panoramic views of the surrounding landscapes.
Simba Camp to Second Cave
Traverse through heath and moorland, witnessing the transition in vegetation. Today's destination is the Second Cave, standing at an elevation of about 3,450 meters. The temperature drops further to approximately 5°C, and the terrain becomes more challenging, preparing you for the days ahead.
Second Cave to Third Cave
As you ascend to the Third Cave, reaching an altitude of around 3,870 meters, the landscape transforms into an alpine desert. Temperature hovers around 0°C, and the air becomes thinner. Marvel at the lunar-like surroundings, a stark contrast to the lush greenery of the lower altitudes.
Third Cave to Kibo Hut
Venture into the arid highland desert on your way to Kibo Hut, located at 4,700 meters. The temperatures plummet to -5°C, and the air gets noticeably thinner. Kibo Hut serves as the last stop before the final ascent to Uhuru Peak, providing a stark and surreal atmosphere.
Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak - Back to Horombo Hut
This is the day you conquer Uhuru Peak, standing proudly at 5,895 meters. The air is thin, and temperatures can drop as low as -10°C. Witness the sunrise from the roof of Africa before descending to Horombo Hut, situated at 3,720 meters. Vegetation reappears, and temperatures become milder.
Horombo Hut to Mandara Hut to Marangu Gate - Back to Moshi/Arusha
Descend through lush rainforests, passing Mandara Hut and reaching Marangu Gate. Bid farewell to Kilimanjaro's magnificent landscapes and return to Moshi/Arusha with a sense of accomplishment.
