Embark on a transformative journey through the iconic Machame Route on Kilimanjaro, a 7-day trek that promises not only the thrill of ascending to the roof of Africa but also a deep immersion into the diverse and awe-inspiring landscapes. From the bustling Kilimanjaro Airport, our adventure begins, leading you through Machame gate, Shira 2 camp, Lava tower, Barranco camp, Karanga, Barafu camp, Uhuru Peak (the summit point), Mweka camp, and finally back to Moshi.
Itinerary
Moshi/Arusha - Machame gate - Machame camp
Temperature: 20°C to 25°C Height: 1,490 meters above sea level Distance: 9 km Nature: Lush rainforest, rich biodiversity, and the beginning of the ascent.
Machame camp - Shira 2 camp
Temperature: 15°C to 20°C Height: 3,840 meters above sea level Distance: 12 km Nature: Transition from rainforest to heath zone, offering stunning views of Shira Plateau.
Shira 2 camp - Lava tower - Barranco camp
Temperature: 10°C to 15°C Height: 3,960 meters above sea level (Lava tower) Distance: 10 km Nature: Alpine desert, Lava tower acclimatization, and the Barranco Wall challenge.
Barranco camp - Karanga Camp
Temperature: 5°C to 10°C Height: 4,035 meters above sea level Distance: 5 km Nature: Scenic landscapes, Karanga Valley, and preparation for the final ascent
Karanga Camp - Barafu camp
Temperature: -5°C to 5°C Height: 4,640 meters above sea level Distance: 4 km Nature: Alpine desert, rocky terrain, and the anticipation of reaching the summit.
Barafu camp - Uhuru Peak (summit point) - Mweka camp
Temperature: -10°C to -5°C (summit) Height: 5,895 meters above sea level (Uhuru Peak) Distance: 19 km (summit day) Nature: Glacial landscapes, sunrise at the summit, and descent to Mweka camp.
Mweka camp - Mweka gate - Back to Moshi
Temperature: -5°C to 5°C Height: 1,640 meters above sea level (Mweka gate) Distance: 10 km Nature: Descending through rainforest, celebration, and return to Moshi.
